Natural remedies for colds and flu: what actually helps when you're sick
Let's talk about your immune cupboard.
Dosing up on vitamin C probably won’t make your symptoms go away any faster - preventing illness in the first place is more effective.
Vitamin C, zinc, elderberry, echinacea. Over-dosing on ArmaForce the moment your throat feels a bit off. You're doing everything "right," and yet you still catch everything.
Here's what's actually going on.
The vitamin C myth
This gets misunderstood constantly: taking vitamin C after you're already sick hasn't been shown to meaningfully shorten a cold or make it feel less terrible. Research has found it may be beneficial for people taking it regularly, but I usually opt for food-as-medicine first. Zinc has slightly better evidence for shortening a cold once you're in it, but it's not a guaranteed fix.
Should you take ArmaForce?
The common over-the-counter immunity product known as ArmaForce contains andrographis, which the TGA has flagged for a real risk of allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, in some people. Andrographis is also traditionally used for acute conditions, not as something you take long-term for prevention. So if you're reaching for it every day "just in case," that's not actually what it's designed for and it may be a risk.
Here’s the deal. Loading up mid-cold hoping to get better quicker doesn’t usually work. Prevention beats cure by looking at the state of your immune system before the virus ever shows up.
Addressing gut health and nutritional status is important for strengthening your immune system and preventing colds and flus.
So what's actually driving the "always sick" cycle?
If you feel like you catch everything going around, that's not bad luck. It's usually one or more of these:
Your gut microbiome. A huge chunk of immune function is shaped by the gut. If it's out of balance, your immune system may be more prone to viruses.
Nutritional deficiencies. Low iron, zinc, vitamin D or protein, often undetected, quietly affect your resilience.
Nervous system load. Chronic stress keeps your body in a state that pulls resources away from immune defence.
Ongoing inflammation. Low-grade inflammation leaves your immune system reactive but inefficient, fighting hard without actually winning.
Think of it like a house. Vitamin C and zinc are the decorations. Your gut, nutrient status and nervous system are the foundations. You can decorate all you want, but if the foundations are cracked, nothing's staying up.
